Access 2007 and VBA Programming

Presented by Norman Eaddy of Info Systems Headquarters Corp.

September 16, 2009

Wednesday, September 16, 2009, Norman Eaddy presented at the CPCUG Access SIG and discussed the topic on programming VBA using MS Access 2007. The presentation was geared towards that have a familiarity with Access 2007 but little or some experience in VBA programming.

Norman Eaddy provided handouts on Microsoft Access 2007 with VBA and also gave us a USB flash that has the notes about MS Access 2007 with VBA in Microsoft Word format (.doc) and Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf). The handout that he gave us showed the basics of using VBA with Access 2007. Some of the pointers that he demonstrated were:

  • An overview of the Capabilities of using Access VBA that interacts with tables, queries, forms, reports, users.
  • An explanation on the difference between a function, a module, and subroutines.
  • How to build an event inside a form by creating a form and adding a text box(We were able to create an event that changes the color from red to green if you double click inside the text box area).
  • Using an If Then statement for creating an event.

I found the information that Norman presented to us was great which allowed us to practice some basics tasks that we can use as part of our database. He also gave us a USB flash drive that has the notes that we discussed at the meetup as well as some other databases to practice with.

For more information, his website is found at http://www.ishqcorp.com.

Discussion On Internet 2020

I had the opportunity to attend a discussion on Internet 2020 which was held on Monday, September 14, 2009 from 6:30pm-8:00pm at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. This discussion was hosted by Representative Edolphus Towns. There were three discussion leaders that focused on topics of what the Internet will be like in 10 years. The discussion leaders that presented were:

Leslie Daigle, Chief Internet Technology Officer, Internet Society
Eric Burger, Chief Technology Officer, Neustar
Steve Crocker, Internet pioneer and CEO, Shinkuro, Inc.

First Discussion Leader – Leslie Daigle

Leslie Daigle discussed technology that did not exist versus technology that exists now. She named a few Internet technologies that came about in the later years of 2000 that we use now such as Facebook, Skype, or even Twitter that did not exist in the year of 1999. She also emphasized how the music industry has change in a way in which iTunes allows people to buy and download music. Leslie discuss the current Internet technology devices we use now such as the BlackBerry and other phone network s that have the advanced capabilities than ten years ago. At the end of her presentation, she left us with several questions to keep in mind which were:

  • Where will the Internet be in ten years or in the year 2020?
  • Will Facebook still be around in ten years from now?
  •

Second Discussion Leader – Eric Burger

Eric Burger focused on the topics of instance messaging, VOIP, covered, and file sharing. He also touched on Amazon and Google and how they service business consumers and others. I found his topics to be of great interest because now in days, a lot of people do use instance messaging as way to communicate with their family, friends, business partnerships around the world.

Third Discussion Leader – Steve Crocker

Steve Crocker did not emphasize much about iCann domain names until I ask a question after the presentation was over. He was truly amazed at how the cell phone industry has changed tremendously and just like Leslie emphasized, the cell phone has advanced capabilities in comparison to ten years ago. He spoke about speech recognition and the use of using Dragon. He, also, too left a question for us to ponder about which was:

“What will be the line of sending a Facebook message or an Instant Message?”

I found the discussion to be quite interesting in that it does make you think how the Internet will be in ten years with so many different technologies being created and marketed.

Washington DC First Official Google Meetup

    August 26, 2009

I had the opportunity to attend the First Official Google Meetup in Washington DC that was organized by Nate Tyler. This event was held at Lima Restaurant and Lounge and to my surprise it was a large crowd of people. I enjoyed pretty much the networking and socializing of others who had their own businesses or worked for others. After sometime of socializing, the presentation began. The presentation was given by a person who works at Google. The presentation was about  30 minutes and was about the history of Google and how to search effectively with Google.

I found the quick presentation on using operators such as: and, or, + or the – an effective use of searching on the web for the results that you want in your search. I also found one useful tool that the presenter made was making use of Google Trends. If we have a business of our own, this tool from Google can be great to follow “the trends” or “the what’s happenings” in the world to stay inform about the world and how it can help with your business.

After the presentation was over, the presenter answered some of the questions that was posted on the moderator board which can be found at Google Moderator site.

I found this event to be of great interest to me as I was able to socialize, meet new people, and of coure learn something new from Google.
